Universities Offer Cryptocurrency Courses: Are They Worth It?
Cryptocurrency, once considered a scam and associated with black money, is now taught in higher education institutions.
Rather than pursuing traditional degrees in economics or finance, many students today choose degrees in blockchain and digital currencies. As a result, more and more universities are adding crypto to their curriculum and offering courses on DeFi.
DailyCoin interviewed two students from UNIC (University of Nicosia), one of the first universities in the world to offer courses on blockchain (since 2013). It is also the first university to accept payment of tuition fees.
The UNIC offers two masters in blockchain: blockchain & digital currency and IT (with specialization in blockchain technologies). The university also runs free MOOCs on blockchain and digital currencies and offers several academic certification programs.
Dive Into Cryptocurrency Studies
Agne Kazakauskaite, an MSc Digital Currencies graduate from UNIC, became interested in blockchain technology in 2016, after discovering that it is a new technology to send data from peer to peer. equal that bypasses middlemen by leveraging data stored on a distributed ledger. .
“At that time, I thought this technology was going to transform entire industries and lines of business,” Agne said.
She started looking for teaching materials and courses and found the masters degree offered by the University of Nicosia:
“I must say that I have always been very studious and eager to learn things, I have always wanted to attend the best educational establishments, take courses, improve myself and satisfy my curiosity.
While studying the MSc, I was also taking online Python programming courses. Now I would have liked to have taken some Solidity courses, but I thought Python would be more applicable, as my background and passion is in finance. So studying another degree was a passion for me. Another former UNIC alumnus, David Stancel, said he accidentally discovered the digital currency master’s program and was intrigued. When he found out he was far away, he immediately decided it wasn’t obvious:
“It was great to have a structured view on the whole subject of digital currencies as it helped me organize my knowledge that I had acquired before the master. We had some great courses that delved into the tech side of Bitcoin as well as smart contract platforms … I know recently new courses have been added regarding DeFi which is super relevant and interesting. I wish I could do them now, ”said David.
Agne mentioned that the recommended course readings were very interesting. One book on the reading list that she highly recommends is The Basel Tower. She also said that writing articles on the topic encourages students to think critically and consider diverse perspectives. She discussed an assignment, which involved writing two persuasive essays: one asserted that “Bitcoin is money” and the other held that “Bitcoin is not money” :
“The professors have provided us with vast sources of credible and interesting information to form our opinions on the economy, monetary systems, and then research on digital currencies.”
Vast employment opportunities after graduation
Having a degree in crypto moved Agne forward and gave her a vision for the future of the digital economy, which helped her develop strong opinions:
“Right now I’m focusing on DeFi; it’s really exciting. I’m a senior evangelist for DeGate DAO, which is building a decentralized trading protocol on Layer2, with its own special Layer3 match node, powered by zero-knowledge technology. I am very enthusiastic and I support the ideology of DAO. I think it brings a whole different take on how we create value. David is CTO at Fumbi, a cryptocurrency brokerage firm. He acknowledged that the degree had been useful for his career:
“The University of Nicosia has an excellent reputation in the field of digital currencies and it has definitely opened doors for me. Plus, I have had a lot of interesting classmates who work with interesting companies, so that alone is a big plus!
As for the knowledge itself, I knew a lot about crypto before entering my masters, but I find it useful as it has helped me to zoom out and do a more systematic overview of all areas. of crypto.
