Hundreds of people awaiting COVID-19 tests will now receive accurate same-day results from equipment normally used to keep poultry and pigs healthy.

MAWD Pathology Expands Ability to Deliver COVID-19 Test Results Using DNA Sequencing Equipment on loan from Ceva Animal Health.

With the increase in cases in the region, MAWD needed to expand its capacity immediately. However, the time to purchase this type of equipment is long. To immediately get the diagnostic tools needed to expand testing, the pathology group had to get creative.

“When we first set up the tests, our goal was to help local hospitals that were seeing far fewer patients concerned about COVID19. The reagents were available and our technologists had the time, so we started with a manual nucleic acid extraction process, ”said Dr Caughron. “With the rapid increase in the number of patients in local hospitals who need to be tested, as well as the strong interest in more facilities in the region and the need to test emergency personnel and other Priority 2 patients , we quickly realized that we had to increase our capacity. “

Ceva laboratories regularly use these tools. However, it was an easy decision to loan them out for human health use. The instruments that Ceva loans are considered the gold standard for this type of diagnostic process in humans and animals.

“Ceva focuses solely on the development of products for animal health. However, we know that the health of humans and animals is interdependent. Our One Health mindset means that we always take an interdisciplinary approach to solving health issues. We are fortunate that our current workload can be adjusted to free up these instruments for human testing during the pandemic, ”said John El-Attrache, global director of scientific and innovation leadership at Ceva.

“The MAWD and the Kansas City community owe a huge thank you to Ceva for providing the equipment so quickly to MAWD to expand testing,” said Dr. Caughron.
