Obi-Wan Kenobi prepares for exile on Tatooine in the final moments of Revenge of the Sith. The Disney Plus show takes place 10 years later.

This Jedi may be in hiding, but he still has the heights. Disney has a lot upcoming Star Wars shows Disney plus streaming service, and one of them will feature an iconic hero: Obi wan kenobi. Ewan McGregor returns to the role of the venerable Jedi Master he played in the three Star Wars prequels.

Disney and lucasfilm announced the show at the D23 convention in August 2019. Here are all the details we have learned since.

When was Obi-Wan Kenobi released?

We do not know yet. Production started in april, and McGregor has been spotted with a very Jedi Master beard a few weeks later.

As a result, the release date is likely to be around the end of 2021 or early 2022. It will consist of six one-hour episodes, McGregor said last year, and he says AND that it is planned as a one-season show.

Disney has dropped episodes of shows on its streaming service on a weekly basis, unlike Netflix’s full season drop approach.

When in the Star Wars timeline is it set?

It will take place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and nine years before New hope, at a time when the Jedi Order was all but wiped out.

Who is Obi-Wan Kenobi?

If you really don’t know you should watch some Star Wars movies. The Quick Version: Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi Master who first appeared onscreen in 1977, a new hope, played by Alec guinness. This movie saw him help young Luke Skywalker take his first steps into the larger world of the Force. Later in that film, Obi-Wan was struck by his former apprentice Darth Vader, who ultimately turned out to be Anakin Skywalker, Luke’s father and a Jedi turned to the dark side.

Despite his death, Obi-Wan returned as a spirit (a ghost of the Force, in Star Wars parlance) to guide Luke through The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He has even gave Rey some help in the force awakens and The Rise of Skywalker.

Hayden Christensen will play Darth Vader again.

The prequel trilogy, which started with The phantom menace in 1999, brought in McGregor as a young Obi-Wan and introduced us to his teacher Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). Qui-Gon discovered Anakin on the desert planet Tatooine, but was killed by Darth Maul, and the responsibility for training the boy fell on Obi-Wan.

Anakin succumbed to the Dark Side in Revenge of the Sith and became Darth Vader, then helped Emperor Palpatine eliminate the Jedi as they founded the Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan survived and fled to Tatooine with Luke, the son Anakin didn’t know he had, while Luke’s twin sister Leia went to live with the Alderaan royal family.

“There may or may not be capes, I’m not saying anything”, McGregor told CBS on Sunday morning May 16. “But coming back and playing it again, Obi-Wan Kenobi, was absolutely awesome.

There will certainly be capes.

Actors: Who’s in Obi-Wan Kenobi?

In addition to McGregor’s return as Obi-Wan, Hayden Christensen – who played Anakin in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith – will come back like Vader.

“It was such an amazing journey playing Anakin Skywalker,” Christensen said to come back to the role. “Of course Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on very good terms the last time we saw them.… It will be interesting to see what an incredible director like Deborah Chow has in store for all of us. working with Ewan again. It feels good to be back. “

Beru and Owen Lars are tasked with raising young Luke Skywalker.

On March 29, Lucasfilm revealed many more of the cast. Joel edgerton and Bonnie piesse will return as Owen and Beru Lars – better known as Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru from Luke Skywalker. At this point in the timeline, they are raising Luke away from the now evil father, Darth Vader. Presumably we’ll see someone new playing a young Luke.

Join them are Kumail Nanjiani, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Moses Ingram, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, Sung Kang, Simone kessell and Benny Safdie in unknown roles – none of them have been in Star Wars before.

On April 22, Variety reported that Maya Erskine (seen in the Hulu comedy PEN15) was sunk in the show. Its role is unknown.

There is another actor who will almost certainly appear, as suggested towards the end of Revenge of the Sith.

“In your solitude on Tatooine, I have a training for you. An old friend has learned the path to immortality – the one who returned from the underworld on the Force. Your former master,” said Yoda as he and Obi-Wan go into exile. “How to commune with him, I’ll teach you.”

Qui-Gon Jinn

Qui-Gon Jinn could make an appearance, in ghost form.

Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn died in The phantom menace, but Neeson returned to the role in The clone wars. He was the first Jedi to become a Force Ghost and guide his allies in the material realm. By the time of the original trilogy, Obi-Wan learned this skill, having been taught by Qui-Gon. We will likely see this in the show. Neeson said Collider as of October 2020, he had yet to be “approached” to reprise the role, but it could happen while the series is filming in 2021.

Expect Jabba the Hutt and his henchmen, along with some of the scum and wickedness seen in the Mos Eisley Cantina, to show up as well.

Who else is involved in this Star Wars show?

Deborah Chow, who directed the episodes 3 and 7 from the first season of The Mandalorian, will lead the Obi-Wan series. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Chow, McGregor and writer Joby Harold will be executive producers.

What do we know about Obi-Wan Kenobi’s plot?

Right now, all we can really say is that Obi-Wan – known to locals as Ben Kenobi – will be watching Luke from a distance during his exile on Tatooine. Don’t think too much about the fact that Vader failed to search for his son on his home planet, that the Galactic Empire didn’t notice a young man by the name of Skywalker, or that Obi-Wan’s alias is pretty darn similar to his. Last name.

It’s unclear what kind of role Vader will play in this show; Obi-Wan could leave Tatooine and have a close encounter with his fallen apprentice, or we could just cut to a distant Vader at some point.

“It will be the revenge of the century,” Kennedy said of Christensen’s return, suggesting that the two will meet.

Obi-Wan will likely also commune with Qui-Gon’s spirit, to learn how to return as a Force ghost.

We have had some canonical glimpses of this period. In the first volume from Marvel’s main Star Wars comic book series, Luke finds Obi-Wan’s diaries after the Jedi’s death in A New Hope. These recount some of his adventures on Tatooine, like saving Luke from Jabba’s henchmen, protecting Jawas from the Tusken Raiders, and saving Owen from bounty hunter Wookiee Black Krrsantan.

Obi-Wan’s final battle with Maul takes place during this time, roughly two years before A New Hope. We already have seen how it goes in the CGI animated series Star Wars Rebels. The Jedi could also reminisce about the fights in the Clone Wars, opening up the possibility of flashbacks (so we could see Christensen playing pre-Dark Side Anakin as well as Vader).

If you are impatient to get a feel for this period, John Jackson Miller’s 2013 Kenobi novel worth reading. This is no longer canon, but it reveals one of Obi-Wan’s adventures as he tries to blend in with Tatooine and is a great read.
