NEW DELHI : Retailers are banking on 5G and 5G-enabled smartphones to drive demand ahead of the holiday season, as big brands prepare to launch tech-based models and telecom carriers launch new services.

Most companies expect 5G phones to make up the bulk of shipments, while some expect prices to fall below 10,000 in six months, which in turn will drive adoption.

“About a third or a quarter of existing phones shipped are 5G-ready, but the price is still higher 15,000. The sub The 10,000 mark will be an inflection point that will drive adoption,” said Vikas Jain, co-founder of Micromax, which has now ventured into connected devices under the World of Play brand.

As the holiday season approaches, top players such as Xiaomi, Realme, Motorola, Oppo and OnePlus have introduced new 5G devices and more are expected to launch more models in the coming months. Prices will however remain in the upper part of 15,000.

“A consumer who upgrades their phone today will surely do so to a 5G device. This is becoming more or less a hygienic factor in mid-range phone segments across brands,” said Navkendar Singh, associate vice president for device research at IDC India, South Asia and ANZ, he added that brands may well be forced to offer discounts and incentive plans to drive demand this festive season. .

According to IDC, 11 million 5G smartphones were shipped to India between January 2022 and June 2022, with an average selling price of $377 or thereabouts. 30,000. On the services side, Vodafone Idea sent messages to its Delhi NCR users on Wednesday notifying them of the “soon” launch of 5G network services on its network.

Competitors Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel announced launches during this month.
